We are excited to be joining the Inverness Medical Clinic as new team members offering specialized reproductive health care with a supportive and individualized approach.
A midwife in Nova Scotia is a primary health care provider. Other examples of primary health care providers include Nurse Practitioners and Family Doctors.
Midwifery is defined by the World Health Organization as “skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate care for childbearing women, newborn infants and families across the continuum from pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, birth, postpartum and the early weeks of life” Midwives in Nova Scotia are regulated by the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia.
Midwives work at the Inverness Medical Clinic, or in some cases, in your home or another community setting. Midwives care for you (and newborn babies) in many ways including: routine checkups, ordering tests and ultrasounds, diagnosing conditions, prescribing medication, referring to specialists and providing education (including breastfeeding support) during pregnancy and for 6 weeks after.
Midwives also offer:
We look forward to meeting you and supporting your health care needs.
If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or have a baby under the age of 6 weeks, you may be referred to a midwife by your health care provider.
You can also reach out to us without a referral by using the contact form below.
You do not need to be enrolled with a family doctor to access midwifery care.
Yes. Midwives may work in collaborative care with the Family Medicine Team as well as referring to specialists as required. Part of your care with us will be working to find the perfect balance for you.
At the moment, our focus is on providing wrap-around reproductive care to improve access in our community. While midwives are skilled at attending birth and delivery, we do not have the resources or infrastructure to offer this in our community yet.
If you are interested in supporting initiatives to bring birth services back to our community, please feel free to reach out. We would love to hear from you.
Midwives in this practice work under an Alternate Practice Arrangement with the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia which states that we will not attend birth in hospital due to the lack of suitable facilities within reasonable geographic distance.
Midwifery care is covered by MSI. If you do not have coverage through MSI, please speak to your midwife.
